First Edition of a Post-War Guide to Vienna: Vienna: Its Towns and Buildings, 1946

(Remember Austria Committee) Fischer, Alois. Gunther v. Baszel, designer. Vienna. The Town and its Buildings. Vienna: Osterreichische Kulturvereinigung, 1946.

Octavo. Paper Wrappers. 1st Edition.

First edition of this casual and historically minded guidebook to Vienna, released just a year after the end of World War II, with 15 double-page color maps. Released just six months after the war, this guidebook was meant for the Western allies navigating the new zone of occupation in Vienna. This well-designed and beautifully printed book was printed using an American paper donation. One of the loveliest books published in the immediate postwar period, it also proved to be one of the most useful due to its historically minded text and the presence of 15 carefully drawn double-page color maps. Owner gift inscription, evidently from an Austrian, on title page reading: "Gary! For youre' Last birthday in Vienna! "Alles Gute" Romayne." A couple tiny spots to preliminaries, only slight soiling to wrappers, and minor rubbing to extremities. A handsome near-fine copy. Scarce.
