Edwards, George Wharton. Vanished Towers and Chimes of Flanders. Philadelphia: Penn Publishing, 1916.

Folio. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

First edition of this lovely book commemorating the Flemish architecture destroyed during World War I, beautifully illustrated with 30 color plates by George Wharton Edwards, the impressionist painter and travel illustrator. While World War I's most tragic loss was unquestionably the 20 million people who were killed, a lesser but still tragic loss was the destruction of huge parts of mainland Europe. Here, impressionist painter and travel author/illustrator George Wharton Edwards catalogs the destroyed architecture--particularly cathedrals--of Flemish Belgium as of 1916.  Without the rare original glassine and box. Only a few spots of foxing to text and plate margins, front hinge split but holding, only minor rubbing to binding. A handsome near-fine copy.
