First Edition of this Wonderful Wartime Cookbook About Doing More With Less

Taylor, Mary L.R. Economy for Epicures. A Practical Menu and Recipe Book. New York, London, & Toronto: Oxford University Press, 1943.

Thick octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

First edition of this cookbook arguing that low-cost meals could still be gourmet, in the original pictorial dust jacket. Prefaced by a small section on war shortages, this cookbook aimed to ignore limitations and allow even less wealthy women to cook creative and delicious meals for their families, including the sorts of foreign dishes that were beginning to become popular. Some prime examples include the (slightly horrifying) Hawaiian Rice (featuring asparagus!), Fish Chaud Froid, Pot au Feu, Burnt Chestnuts, and Patagonia Cake. Book fine, price-clipped dust jacket near-fine with a bit of chipping to spine ends. Most desirable.
