Rare first edition of this practical guide to living with British wartime scarcities, offering tips on everything from how to devil beetroot to dealing with the ever-present threat of broken glass from German bombing getting into the food supply, in the original dust jacket. One of the most beloved cookbook authors of the World War II era, Ambrose Heath was known as much for his warmth as for his practical, accessible recipes. His cookbooks attempted to help and encourage women to surmount the difficulties presented by rationing, full-time-work, and constant bombing. In each of his recipes, he pointed out the little places where women could save and scrimp, while still taking pride in feeding their families well. Some of his more innovative (for the time) recipes suggested saving the water from boiling fish to make rice, using apple peels and cores to make a nutrient-filled drink for children, and foraging greens like dandelions and nettles. Book near-fine, with crease to first page of text and faint dampstain to corner. Dust jacket with only light wear mainly to head of spine. A lovely near-fine copy.
