First Edition of Vita Sackville-West's The Women's Land Army, 1944,
Richly Photo-Illustrated, in the Original Dust Jacket

Sackville-West, Vita. The Women's Land Army. London: Michael Joseph, 1944.

Slim octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

Scarce first edition of this compelling history of World War II's Women's Land Army, featuring personal stories of the land girls and numerous photographic illustrations of the Land Army at work, in the original dust jacket. "Published when the Women’s Land Army was still active, the book provides an insight into the work undertaken by the Land Girls and provides the chronological context to its formation and part played in both world wars. In addition to a range of first-hand Land Girl recounts, Sackville-West brings together [64] photographs presenting the scope of work undertaken by Land Girls in a variety of different settings" (Cherish Watton). Includes a picture of Queen Elizabeth II, who joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, maintaining and driving Army vehicles. This is the 1944 first edition; a facsimile reprint was published by the Imperial War Museum in the 1990s and is often mistaken for the first edition. Book with toning to cloth extremities, dust jacket with only light wear to extremities. A near-fine copy.
