De Angeli, Marguerite. Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, 1954.
1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio 13" - 23" tall.
First edition of this collection of nursery rhymes, including both old favorites and somewhat forgotten ones, with dozens of striking illustrations. Written by a two-time Newberry Award-winner, Marguerite De Angeli's Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes is one of the most comprehensive of the genre. De Angeli clearly devoted herself to unearthing as many nursery rhymes as possible, including a number of older English ones. The illustrations are remarkably beautiful and old-fashioned and distinguish this work from others like it. Later editions of this work use glossy paper for the illustrations, removing the soft pastel quality of the art for which De Angeli is so well known. Book near-fine, with only a couple of tiny and faint stains to front board and a few bumps to bottom edge. Dust jacket extremely good, with a few faint stray marks and a bit of wear and shallow chipping to extremities. A very collectible copy.
