Published in 1943, Private Pepper of Dogs for Defense was a children's book (fictional) about the real-life Dogs for Defense program that recruited pet dogs during World War II. More than 18,000 canine recruits became part of the U.S. war effort--many of whom returned home to their original owners after fighting in the war. This book deals with the wartime adventures of a collie named Pepper who serves in the U.S. Army and saves the life of his handler. Owner gift inscription.
