Wonderfully Illustrated by Thornton Oakley

Oakley, Amy. Oakley, Thornton. Scandinavia Beckons. New York and London: D. Appleton-Century, 1938.

Octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.

First edition of this engaging travel narrative of a pre-World War II trip to Scandinavia covering Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Originally known for their travel writing and illustration about France, the Oakleys here undertake travel in Scandinavia, carefully and entertainingly detailing adventures in Denmark, Norway (which they knew and loved best), Sweden, and Finland. The result is a snapshot of Scandinavia just before the German invasion. Of special note are the black-and-white illustrations by Pennsylvania artist and illustrator Thornton Oakley, who studied under Howard Pyle and went on to become a prominent part of the Brandywine School. Contemporary gift inscription on pictorial endpaper. Owner signature of presumptive recipient, Charlotte P. Milne, on pictorial endpaper. Tiny bookseller label. Book fine, dust jacket bright and near-fine with only slightest soiling and light wear to extremities. A lovely, collectible copy.
