(Pop-Ups and Moveables). Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The Illustrated Pop-Up Edition. New York: Blue Ribbon, 1934.
Octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.
First edition of this early Blue Ribbon pop-up book, with three double-page pop-ups depicting scenes from Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Illustrated by C. Carey Cloud and Harold B. Lentz, Goldilocks and the Three Bears published by Blue Ribbon Press is an early American example of the pop-up book. It features several in-text black-and-white illustrations and three pop-up double-page illustrations in full color including Goldilocks tasting the porridge; the three bears discovering Goldilocks in bed; and Papa Bear evicting Goldilocks from his house. This version of Goldilocks takes a rather ambivalent approach to her breaking and entering. It describes Goldilocks breaking numerous items in the house, but also the bears nearly eating her before the intervention of Baby Bear. Happily, the story ends with the bears installing a lock, ensuring that no other little girls will trespass. Contemporary owner Xmas inscription in margin. All pop-ups fully functional, but the chairs in the first pop-up appear to have been reglued and the face of Papa Bear in the final pop-up is slightly creased. This title is often well-worn and an example such as this with the pop-ups as described, text fine, and boards very nearly so is quite collectible.
