(Pop-Ups and Moveables). Clyne, Geraldine, illustrator. The Jolly Jump-Ups See the Circus. Springfield, Massachusetts: McLoughlin Bros., 1944.
Octavo. Hardcover. 1st Edition.
First edition of this fun installment in the Jolly Jump-Ups Series about the "Jingling" Bros. circus, with six beautiful color pop-ups depicting circus and carnival scenes. The Jolly Jump-Ups series was created by Geraldine Clyne as an engaging reflection of mid-century life and the adventures of the typical 1940s family. This installment focuses on the circus--really more of a circus/carnival hybrid--with pop-ups depicting a parade; a carnival barker at the entrance; a small zoo; a Wild West Show; a sideshow; and the actual circus. While cage-filled zoos and freakshows are largely in the past (thankfully), the scenes in this book would have been familiar to most 1940s American children. Pop-ups all fine and fully intact, mild toning to interior as often, a bit of light wear to boards mostly obscured by the bright and busy cover illustration. Near-fine condition.
